Homework
Homework is an important part of learning in 1st grade. This year students will bring home a homework packet (either Friday or Monday -- depending on school schedule) and will have until the following Wednesday to complete the work. ALL homework should be turned in on the following Wednesday. Students who do NOT return their homework will be asked to stay in from recess to complete homework during our "Homework Club" time. Some students will be able to complete homework over one recess time (15 minutes) while other students may take more than one recess time. Students will forfeit as many recess times as necessary to complete homework.
Types of homework:
Types of homework:
- REading (at least 15-20 minutes a night) -- these will come home in Book Bags
- Math homework -- Will come home on Friday and Due the following Wednesday (unless otherwise noted)
- Incomplete classroom work -- depending on student, if they do not complete their classroom work they will be asked to complete the work at home.
Book Bags
Book bags will begin coming home beginning in October! I have chosen books for your child based on the DRA level his/her kindergarten teacher recorded at the end of last year minus the 10% reduction of normal skills loss over the summer. For those students who are new to Central this year, I will send home books that are grade level minus the 10%. PLEASE let me know if the books are too easy or too hard for your student ASAP.
Please also note that some of these books belong to me (personally) and some to our classroom. Just like our School library, the cost of lost books will be charged to the student at a fair cost of replacement. So, please make sure to return all the books.
Finally, book bags should be returned to school EVERY DAY. In the bag will be a calendar for you to keep track of how many minutes your child reads each day.

WHY CAN'T I SKIP MY 20 MINUTES OF
READING TONIGHT?
- Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week;
- Student B reads only 4 minutes a night...or not at all!
- Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week.
- Student A reads 20 min. x 5 times a week = 100 mins./week
- Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 minutes
- Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.
- Student A reads 400 minutes a month.
- Student B reads 80 minutes a month.
- Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year
- Student A reads 3600 min. in a school year.
- Student B reads 720 min. in a school year.
- Student A practices reading the equivalent of ten whole school days a year.
- Student B gets the equivalent of only two school days of reading practice.
- By the end of 5th grade if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits, Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days.
- Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.
- One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance.
- How do you think Student B will feel about him/herself as a student?
- Which student would you expect to read better?
- Which student would you expect to know more?
- Which student would you expect to write better?
- Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary?
- Which student would you expect to be more successful in school....and in life?
